Lemon Leopard was born out of a deep yearning to build something beyond the walls of institutions, beyond theory, beyond survival. Our journey began with a group of thinkers, dreamers, artists, and outsiders who found refuge within the university not just in its buildings, but in the space it offered for shared inquiry. For years, we worked across philosophy, storytelling, and social change. But the question always lingered: what if we could live these ideas, not just research them?
From that question, Ginger Giraffe was formed as a cooperative of people on the margins, brought together by a university research project on participatory budgeting and alternative ways of living. One of our founders was completing a PhD, but what emerged was bigger than any dissertation: a shared vision to create a new kind of community, rooted in justice, care, and creativity.
In 2019, serendipity struck. A crumbling shoe factory, filled with echoes of stories past, opened its grand doors to us. With the support of a vibrant live music venue, Folklore Hoxton, we transformed the space into an experimental home, part cultural hub, part co-living experiment, part creative incubator. This space became our prototype. A living, breathing laboratory for collective stewardship, artistic experimentation, and radical hospitality.
In 2020, we formally launched Lemon Leopard to carry this vision forward. With generous support from partners like The National Lottery Community Fund, the Greater London Authority, and The People’s Health Trust, we tested and refined three core pillars of our work: shared living, wellbeing practices, and cultural connection. From grassroots rituals to structural change, we learned how to anchor big dreams in everyday practices.
As our ideas grew, so did our need for a permanent home, not just a venue, but a sanctuary. We discovered an asset of community value: a historic pub and backpackers hostel, rich with potential. This is where we now deepen our work creating space for healing, cultural exchange, and the long, slow magic of transformation.
Our safari is not linear. It weaves and wanders, like the people who walk it. We are scholars, people on the margins of society, poets and planters, musicians and mystics. What binds us is not what we do, but how we see: interconnected, interdependent, and endlessly becoming.
